RV & Travel Trailer Insurance in Texas
We are an independent agency writing RV insurance in Texas that compares carriers side by side instead of renewing one company's product, because the gap most owners never hear about is that the liability on your truck does nothing for the camper hitched behind it.

A Motorhome and a Travel Trailer Are Not the Same Thing in Texas
Texas law treats them differently, and that is where most of the confusion starts.
A motorhome has an engine, so the state sees it as a motor vehicle. It has to carry at least 30/60/25 liability, meaning $30,000 for bodily injury to one person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is offered alongside it, and you have to reject it in writing if you do not want it.
A travel trailer, fifth wheel or pop-up has no engine. Texas does not require a policy on the trailer itself. What it requires is liability on the truck doing the towing, which every owner already has.
Here is the part that costs people money. That towing liability follows the truck. It pays for damage your rig causes to someone else while you are hooked up, and it pays nothing to repair or replace your trailer. A camper that jackknifes on I-45, takes a hailstorm in a storage lot, or gets stolen off the pad is uninsured unless it carries a policy of its own. The trailer is usually the expensive half.
What Moves the Price on RV and Travel Trailer Insurance
We will not post an average premium, because the number swings hard depending on the rig. These are the things that actually set it:
- The type of unit, whether that is a Class A diesel pusher, a Class B camper van, a Class C, a travel trailer, a fifth wheel or a toy hauler.
- The value and age of the unit, and whether it is still financed.
- Where it lives between trips, covered storage, an open lot, or the side of the house.
- How far and how often you travel, and whether you leave Texas with it.
- Whether anyone lives in it full time or seasonally.
- The deductible you choose, including a separate wind and hail deductible on some carriers.
A towable almost always prices well below a motorhome, since there is no engine to insure and no driving liability attached to it. That surprises owners who assumed a trailer policy was going to cost real money, and it is the reason so many trailers end up with no coverage at all. Call us and we will price your actual unit instead of a category.
The Coverage Parts, in Plain Language
An RV policy has more moving pieces than an auto policy, and the pieces are where two quotes at the same price stop being equal.
- Comprehensive and collision on the unit itself, which is what pays for hail, theft, fire, and damage on the road.
- Liability, medical payments and uninsured motorist coverage on a motorhome, since you are driving it.
- Total loss replacement or agreed value versus actual cash value, covered below.
- Personal effects coverage for the clothing, bedding, tools, cookware and electronics inside.
- Attached accessory coverage for awnings, satellite domes, solar panels, slide out toppers and racks.
- Emergency expense coverage, which pays for lodging and transportation when a breakdown strands you away from home.
- Roadside assistance sized for a forty foot rig rather than a sedan, including towing that can actually move it.
- Vacation liability, which covers you while the RV is parked at a campsite and being used as a residence.
Personal effects and attached accessories are the two most commonly missing items on a policy someone brings us for a second look, and both are usually inexpensive to add.
Agreed Value, Total Loss Replacement and Actual Cash Value
If two RV quotes land within a few dollars of each other, this is almost always the difference. Actual cash value settles a total loss at what the unit is worth the day it burns or floods, after depreciation. Agreed value settles at a number you and the carrier set in advance. Total loss replacement pays for a comparable new unit, and it is usually available only in the early model years.
On a depreciating asset that lost value the day it left the dealership, that choice is the difference between a check that replaces your rig and a check that pays off part of the loan. We walk through it before you buy rather than after a claim.
Full-Timer Coverage, If the RV Is Where You Live
A standard RV policy assumes you have a house somewhere else. When the RV is your primary residence, that assumption leaves a hole exactly where a Texas homeowners policy would normally sit.
Full timer coverage fills it. It adds personal liability for injuries you are responsible for away from the road, medical payments for a guest hurt at your site, and loss of use if the unit becomes unlivable after a covered loss. It also raises personal effects limits to something realistic for a household rather than a vacation.
If you are living in the rig for six months a year or twelve, tell us. Carriers define full time use differently and the answer changes which one we take you to.
Hail Does Not Care That Your Camper Is Parked
Hail is the most common RV claim in Texas, and the roof of a travel trailer is one of the easiest things in the state to total. A rig sitting uncovered in a storage yard in League City, Friendswood or Conroe is exposed every month of the year, not just the weeks you are using it.
Wind and storm surge matter too if the unit is parked at a coastal property or in a lot near the bay. A camper is light, tall and flat sided, which is the worst combination in a wind event.
The mistake we see most often is the one that sounds thrifty. Somebody drops coverage on a camper that has not moved since October, a spring storm rolls through, and there is no comprehensive coverage to pay for the roof. Comprehensive is the coverage that works while you are not.
When Your Lender or the Campground Requires Coverage
Texas may not require a policy on a towable, but a contract can, and two show up constantly:
- A financed motorhome or fifth wheel will have comprehensive and collision required by the lienholder, which will also be named as loss payee on the policy.
- Many RV parks, resorts and long term campgrounds ask for proof of liability coverage before they will confirm a stay, especially for monthly or seasonal sites.
Send us the loan paperwork or the park's requirement sheet and we will write the policy to match it the first time, so nobody is chasing a certificate the week you are supposed to leave.
Quoted From League City, Written Across All 254 Texas Counties
Amber has written insurance in Texas since 2009, in the Montgomery County area first and from this League City office since 2016, and brings 18 years in finance and insurance. Three licensed agents work out of that one office, and all three of us write across the entire state. Because we are independent, we take your rig to several carriers instead of one, and we re-shop it at renewal rather than letting it renew on its own.
Locally that means RVs stored around League City, Clear Lake, Friendswood, Conroe, Willis and The Woodlands, and campers towed to the coast, to Lake Conroe and out to Hill Country parks. Statewide it means the same coverage for a fifth wheel in Amarillo or a Class A in the Rio Grande Valley, handled by phone, email and video, with the same agent every time.
If the RV shares the driveway with
a boat or a jet ski, we will look at those in the same conversation. It all sits under our
recreational insurance lineup.

RV and Travel Trailer Questions Texas Owners Ask Us
Does Texas require RV insurance?
Texas requires liability coverage on a motorhome, because a motorhome is a motor vehicle. The minimum is 30/60/25, which is $30,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 in property damage. Physical damage coverage on the motorhome itself is optional under state law but required by any lender financing it.
Do I need insurance on a travel trailer in Texas?
The state does not require it, since a trailer has no engine. What Texas requires is liability on the vehicle towing it. That liability pays for damage you cause to others and pays nothing toward your trailer, so a travel trailer without its own policy has no coverage for hail, theft, fire or collision damage.
Does my auto policy cover my camper while I am towing it?
Your auto liability generally extends to the trailer while it is attached, which covers injury or damage you cause to someone else. It does not cover physical damage to the camper. A few auto policies add limited trailer coverage by endorsement, but the limits are usually far below what a travel trailer is worth.
How much does travel trailer insurance cost?
It depends on the value and age of the trailer, whether it is financed, where it is stored, how much you travel with it, and the deductible you pick. Towables typically cost meaningfully less than motorhomes because there is no engine and no driving liability on the unit. We compare several carriers and give you a real number for your trailer rather than a range.
Do I need RV insurance if my camper is parked all winter?
Yes, if you want hail, wind, fire and theft covered, and those are the losses that happen to a parked unit. Comprehensive coverage is what pays in storage. Some carriers offer a reduced storage or lay up rate that lowers the premium while the unit is not being driven, and we will ask about that when we quote.
What is full timer coverage for an RV?
It is an add on for people whose RV is their primary residence. It provides the personal liability, medical payments to others, and loss of use protection a homeowners policy would normally give you, plus higher limits on personal belongings. Without it, a full time RVer has a gap where their home coverage should be.
Does the policy cover my belongings inside the unit?
Personal effects coverage handles what is inside, from bedding and clothing to tools, grills and electronics, usually with its own limit and deductible. It is not automatic on every policy and the default limit is often low. Add up what actually lives in the rig and tell us the number so we can set the limit to match.
What insurance do I need for a fifth wheel in Texas?
A fifth wheel is a towable, so the state does not require a policy on it, but a lienholder will require comprehensive and collision if it is financed. Most owners also carry personal effects, attached accessory and vacation liability coverage, and full timer coverage if they live in it. We build the policy around how you actually use it.
Tell Us What You Tow and We Will Tell You What It Needs
Send us the year, make and model of the rig, where it is stored, and how often it moves. We will explain the coverage before we quote it, then take it to multiple carriers and come back with one honest number.
Call (936) 445-6701, email apillsbury@twfg.com, or send us a note. We are open Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.
